Finally we have had some rain. It seems funny for an essence maker to be looking for rain rather than sunny skies. But there has been a serious lack of water lately and just at a time when plants are making their main growth in stems and leaves. In this area (Herefordshire) this has not stopped the Wild Roses from blooming with strength and determination as usual. This is in part because of the heavy clay soils which Rosa canina and indeed, most other roses, enjoy. The clay retains moisture when there is little rain. Porous sandy soils soon let the moisture fall through into the aquifer below.
